Background: The request for housing in Ghana is great and as a result the selection of durable roofing sheets have become very significant as roofing plays a vital role in building construction. The goal of the investigation was to see how corrosive compounds affected the most predominant roofing sheets on the Ghanaian market. One-star galvanized Japan [G1*Jap], Galvanized Coated [GC], Aluzinc three star galvanized [AlZn3*], One Star Galvanized Indi [G1*Ind], and Aluminium [Al] were the most common on the market and were therefore used. The corrosion experiments were carried out by putting the various samples in five jars containing various chemicals for varying amounts of time. A computer interfaced Optical Microscope (Leica DM 2500M) was employed to study the surface microstructures of the corroded surfaces, with the corrosion rates per day being determined. Results: Average corrosion rates for One-star Galvanized Japan [G1*Jap] roofing sheets were observed to be the most corrosive resistant whiles [AlZn3*] roofing sheets were the least resistant to corrosion. Generally, G1*Jap roofing sheet stood out as the best roofing sheet in terms of resistance to corrosion. Conclusion: These numbers lead to the conclusion that when compared to the other roofing sheets, G1*Jap roofing sheets were shown to be the most corrosion resistant. The most corroded roofing sheets were found to be Aluzinc three star galvanized [AlZn3*] roofing sheets.

The study was aim at investigation the level of corrosion on roofing sheets utilized in Gombe where acid and alkaline medium immersion test of 25 days showed that light zinc (0.15 mm) sample decreased in weight from 0.03g to 0.04 g while the 2.0mm zinc decreased in weight range of 0.01g to 0.04 g in the alkaline solution. Samples of thick aluminum (5.5 mm) and light aluminium(4.5mm) showed insignificant weight range 0.0g to 0.03 g after immersion in alkaline. In acidic medium both light and thick zinc showed greater weight lost 0.05g to 0.08g. However both the thick and light aluminium showed loss of their shiny appearance only with no renowned significant corrosion throughout the twenty-five days of immersion. XRF analysis of the oxides on the corrosion samples of 0.15mm zinc showed decreasing pattern of: Fe2O3 > SiO2.> Na2O >Al2O3 > MnO > CaO respectively. The decreasing order of the percentage of oxides on 2.0mm zinc: Fe2O3 > SiO2 .>Al2O3 > CaO > MnO oxides on 4. 5mm. Aluminium is in decreasing order of; Al2O3 > SiO2.> Fe2O3 > CaO > K2O . On the other side percentage of the oxides of 5.0mm Aluminium is Al2O3 > SiO2 > MnO respectively. Aluminium samples are more durable and resistant which indicates suitability for roofing than zinc sheets.

ABSTRACT. Acid rain condition were simulated on three selected stone-coated roofing sheets sold in Nigeria to assess the rate of metallic dissolution using (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 M) concentration of sulfuric acid, simulated acid rain (0.5 M of HCl, HNO3 and H2SO4) for 30 days in a controlled environment. Six metals (Pb, Fe, Zn, Al, Si, and Cd) concentration were determined using same concentration of sulfuric acid and distilled water for three hours at elevated temperature of 55 ºC. The results showed that as concentration increases across the three samples, the corrosion rate of stone-coated roofing sheets increases. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the weight loss of the samples were significant by all input variables. The fourth order polynomial model conducted for weight loss and corrosion showed best fit with regression (R2) which ranged from 0.95 and 0.99 across three samples except for 1.00 M of sulfuric acid at 0.8953, 0.8862, and 0.8933 for Sample 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Metal dissolution conducted for three hours showed that zinc had highest dissolution across different concentration, followed by iron respectively, aluminum dissolved at 0.75 M sulfuric acid; lead dissolved at 0.25 M, 1 M and distilled water while silicon and cadmium had relatively low dissolution accordingly. Acid rain has negative impact on corrosion stone-coated roofing sheets thus influencing its lifespan and durability.
