Atmospheric corrosion of galvanized steel and aluminium in marine and marine‐industrial environments of Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Three-year exposure programme was carried out in Saudi Arabia at nine test stations with different climatic and pollution conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the joint effect of atmospheric pollutants (Cl À and SO 2 ), relative humidity (RH) and temperature (T) on the atmospheric corrosion of galvanized steel (GS) and aluminium (Al). Corrosion rates of the two metals have been obtained by loss of weight after 1, 2 and 3 years exposure. The composition of the corrosion products formed on the speci… Show more

“…With such a complex condition, the effect of temperature on atmospheric corrosion in ambient condition was perceived to be secondary. 3,24 This was also observed in the results of some field corrosion tests. 11,20 Lindstrom et al 25 reported an interesting experimental result that in the presence of CO 2 , the zinc corrosion rate did not show a dependence on temperature.…”

“…Galvanized steel is well known for its high resistance to atmospheric corrosion and has a wide range of application from the automotive and marine industries to fluid transport systems . Galvanized steel corrosion has been studied by a vast number of researchers throughout the world . Pattern of atmospheric corrosion was mainly determined by corrosivity of environment and corrosion resistant nature of materials which in turn depend upon various meteorological factors, pollutant levels and protective nature of corrosion products …”
