“…Lastly, strong correlations observed between Na + and Cl − and Mg 2+ and Cl − , for both fractions, indicate the presence of NaCl and MgCl 2 salts, the biggest percentage of which is found in the coarse fraction. The above are in agreement with aforementioned studies in Greece (Tsitouridou and Samara, 1993;Danalatos and Glavas, 1995;Eleftheriadis et al, 1998) Cl…”

“…In the FPM, in AEDA S is the most abundant element, while near the ground, in Athinas St. site, Ca dominates this fraction also, with concentrations significantly higher than the ones of AEDA. Previous publications have mentioned the existence of great amounts of Ca in the atmosphere of locations in Greece (Danalatos and Glavas, 1995), and in Athens, in particular (Scheff and Valiozis, 1990;Sillanpää et al, 2006), as well as other eastern Mediterranean sites (Graham et al, 2004;Kouyoumdjian and Saliba, 2006). The CPM concentrations of Ca, Al, Si, Fe and Ti are higher in Athinas St. A similar phenomenon is observed for the respective FPM concentrations of these compounds, with the exception of Fe and Al for which FPM Athinas St. concentrations do not differ much from the ones in AEDA.…”

“…When NH 4 NO 3 is formed, it is present as fine‐mode particles (less than 1 μ m) and has low deposition velocities. Measurements performed in several locations in the EMS [ Kouvarakis et al , 2001; Danalatos et al , 1995; Koçak et al , 2004] found no NH 4 NO 3 during the dry period (May to September). The main reasons for the absence of NH 4 NO 3 are the elevated temperatures and the high regional sulphate concentrations, which neutralize NH 3 and prevent formation of NH 4 NO 3 via reaction (2) [ Bardouki et al , 2003].…”

“…Numerous studies have been devoted to investigating the chemical compositions of PM 10 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters less than 10 m). Although the information is available on the precursors of PM 2.5 from the United States (Koutrakis et al, 1988) and European regions (Danalatos et al, 1995), the detailed information on the acidic gases, which are the precursors of PM 2.5 such as sulfate and nitrate particulates, are limited from the Taiwan (Island) region.…”

“…Similar behaviors of ammonia-nitric acid were also recorded by Danalatos et al (1995) and Ansari and Pandis (1998). Table 2 shows the variation in temperature and relative humidity during the sampling days.…”
