Atmospheric ray tomography for low-Z materials: implementing new methods on a proof-of-concept tomograph

Abstract: Cosmic rays interacting with the atmosphere result in a flux of secondary particles including muons and electrons. Atmospheric ray tomography (ART) uses the muons and electrons for detecting objects and their composition. This paper presents new methods and a proof-of-concept tomography system developed for the ART of low-Z materials. We introduce the Particle Track Filtering (PTF) and Multi-Modality Tomographic Reconstruction (MMTR) methods. Based on Geant4 models we optimized the tomography system, the param… Show more

“…The GScan Muon Tracker is based on scintillating fibers, as they are widely used and offer several advantages, making them suitable for a wide variety of applications. The GScan Muon Tracker is a 4-layered prototype hodoscope (3-1 configuration) with 1 mm Saint-Gobain BCF-12 single cladding scintillation fibers [6]. The fibers are arranged as two double-layered fiber mats oriented orthogonally to each other, as shown in Figure 1.…”

“…The use of plastic scintillating fibres up to several meters long assembled in multi-row mats has also become widespread. This technology makes it possible to ensure the accuracy of the determination of the hit position resolution for muons at the level of 150 µm [77].…”

“…This resolution corresponds to detector design based on multiple layers of scintillating plastic fiber arrays used as position sensitive detectors. The prototype based on such a design was constructed [20] and spatial resolution of 0.15 mm was obtained with a double layer array of round cross-sections plastic scintillating fibers of 1 mm in diameter.…”
