Atmospheric water-soluble organic nitrogen (WSON) in the eastern Mediterranean: origin and ramifications regarding marine productivity

Abstract: Abstract. Aerosol and rain sampling in two size fractions was carried out at a rural site located on the coast of the eastern Mediterranean, Erdemli, Turkey (36 • 33 54 N, 34 • 15 18 E). A total of 674 aerosol samples in two size fractions (337 coarse, 337 fine) and 23 rain samples were collected between March 2014 and April 2015. Samples were analyzed for NO − 3 , NH + 4 and ancillary water-soluble ions using ion chromatography and water-soluble total nitrogen (WSTN) by applying a high-temperature combustion … Show more

“…Regarding nutrients, nitrogen species concentrations in rain samples were in good agreement with those reported in Mediterranean rain samples, ranging from 1130 to µg L -1 for NO3and between 207 and µg L -1 for NH4 + (Loye-Pilot et al, 1990;Avila et al, 1997;Al Momani et al, 1998;Herut et al, 1999;Violaki et al, 2010;Izquieta-Rojano et al, 2016;Nehir and Koçak, 2018). The FAST rain concentrations were in the average values, whereas the ION rain was in the low range, confirming a background signature.…”

“…This result indicates that ON at the SET station is not generated by primary sources but is rather derived from secondary processes. Common ON compounds, such as hydroxyalkyl nitrates, are generally produced by reaction of gas phase NO x with VOCs. , WION, which is dominant in ON, is mostly produced via the reaction of gaseous hydrocarbons with NH 3 . , Moreover, some of the other pathways leading to the formation of ON are mostly related to agricultural activities, biological particles, or secondary processes …”

“…Given their importance, nitrogenous aerosols have been studied in different geographical environments: urban cities, coasts, ocean, , forest, mountains, and polar regions. , Urban areas such as Delhi and Beijing, which are influenced by intense human activities, exhibit nitrogenous aerosol concentrations about two orders of magnitude higher than those reported over background sites such as the Antarctic and the Western Pacific . In recent years, considerable efforts have been made spatially and temporally to better understand the processes’ controlling factors of the atmospheric budget of these nitrogenous aerosol species such as inorganic nitrogen and organic nitrogen, , their sources, and physicochemical properties.…”

“…For cationic species CS12A column coupled with 20mM methane sulfonic acid as eluent (flow rate: 1.0 mL/min, applied current: 59 mA, injection volume: 25µL) is used while analysis of anionic species was performed with AS11 column and 30mM NaOH as eluent (flow rate: 1.0 mL/min, applied current: 112 mA, injection volume: 200 µL). Analyses were carried out at 30° C with suppressed conductivity detector (Nehir and Koçak, 2018).…”
