Atomlike, Hollow-Core–Bound Molecular Orbitals of C 60

Abstract: The atomic electron orbitals that underlie molecular bonding originate from the central Coulomb potential of the atomic core. We used scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory to explore the relation between the nearly spherical shape and unoccupied electronic structure of buckminsterfullerene (C60) molecules adsorbed on copper surfaces. Besides the known pi* antibonding molecular orbitals of the carbon-atom framework, above 3.5 electron volts we found atomlike orbitals bound to the core of t… Show more

“…In this way, image potential states (IS's) are Stark-shifted and actually become field emission resonances (FER's) as observed on different metal 1 and semiconductor surfaces. 2 FER's can be used to chemically identify different surface terminations from a study of the local changes in the work function [3][4][5][6][7] as well as to probe the effects of electron confinement in metallic 8,9 and molecular 10 nanostructures. Since the energetics of FER's is to a large extent determined by the electric field at the junction, the interpretation of the data is relatively simple.…”

“…Concerning C-based materials, superatom states of adsorbed fullerenes can lead to the formation of free electron bands (61). Endohedral doping of fullerenes offers then a route to tailor the superatom state properties.…”

“…Among the clusters with various sizes, those deemed "superatoms" exhibit enhanced stabilities due to the electronic shell closing [5]. Many superatomic structures, such as C 60 [6], Al 13 [7], Na 40 [8] and Au 20 [9], have been experimentally confirmed. Recently, the Au 32 gold fullerene was revealed to have 1S 2 1P 6 1D 10 1F 14 electronic configuration, thus making a superatom [10,11].…”
