Atopic Eczema and Stress among Single Parents and Families: An Empirical Study of 96 Mothers

Abstract: This study investigated the extent to which single mothers of children with atopic eczema experience disease-related stress. A total of 96 mothers were divided into 4 groups: mothers living with a partner, who had or did not have a child with atopic eczema, and single mothers, who had or did not have a child with atopic eczema. “…[13][14][15] Contrary to allergic bronchial asthma and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis ('hay fever'), the aetiopathogenesis of atopic eczema is still not well established. [23][24][25][26][27][28] A study measuring quality of life in children with AE showed that those with generalized eczema had an impaired quality of life score similar to children affected with cystic fibrosis, severe renal disease or cerebral palsy, while more localized forms showed similar scores to rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes. 16 2 The deviated immune response towards Th2-dominant responses with increased immunoglobulin E production and distinct inflammatory events leading to allergic reactions against a multitude of environmental allergens from the air or from foods.…”

“…21,22 The disease goes along with a remarkable economic burden both for the affected individual and for society and with marked impairment in quality of life. 29 Furthermore, there are deficits in quality of health care for the affected persons and their families.…”

“…Despite a strong commitment to the health and development of all children, there are still concerns about poor childhood health outcomes due to issues within the social determinants of health. In recent studies, single-parenthood is recognised as a risk factor for the development of chronic health conditions among children [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]. Children in single-parent households are seen as a socially vulnerable population, as their families tend to have a lower overall income, resulting in food insecurity and other physical conditions that impose a heightened risk for maladaptive health outcomes.…”

“…A 22‐item German questionnaire for parents of children with atopic eczema (Fragebogen für Eltern von Neurodermitis kranken Kindern; FEN) has been developed and used . The FEN includes four subscales: ‘aggressive behaviours towards scratching’ (eight items), ‘protective behaviour’ (seven items), ‘control of scratching’ (four items) and ‘negative experiences with the treatment’ (three items).…”
