Atopy and allergic respiratory disease in rural Poland before and after accession to the European Union

Abstract: We report a substantial increase in atopy at all ages and in a remarkably short period of time in a Polish population whose farm-related exposures were dramatically reduced after their country's accession to the European Union.

“…This is similar to previous reports from other countries in Europe [2, 3,9,19,20,22] and more globally with some variation by geographic location [9,24,25]. The explanation of the observed trend of allergic diseases is difficult because many factors may play role such as environment, socio-economic status, and lifestyle changes.…”

“…In a previous study of children living in villages compared to a town in Poland, there was a significant increase in the prevalence of atopy in villages between 2003 and 2012 (7.3e19.6%) but no difference in the town (20.0e19.9%) [19]. Asthma prevalence was relatively stable between the time points (approximately 4e5%) [19]. Similar to these results, previous comparisons of the prevalence of asthma and allergic disease in East Germany shortly after unification (1995-6 vs 1991-2) showed increases in the prevalence of allergic disorders but no differences in the prevalence of asthma [20].…”

“…This fact could also be connected with the improvement in farming conditions [18], but a more probable explanation is the general reduction in the quantity of cattle in Europe. In some countries, this reduction is related to entry into the European Union [15,19]. In the Slovak Republic the number of cattle dropped by two-thirds in 2008, compared to 1990, and the decrease continues progressively.…”

“…In general, however, agriculture is connected with one paradox: for instance, Sozańska described that after the reduction in the number of cattle in the Sibilant Region in Poland, there was a significant increase in atopy and allergic respiratory diseases [19]. This demonstrates the protective effect of farming [21]; consequently, young farmers have a low prevalence of asthma.…”
