Atrazine accumulation and toxic responses in maize Zea mays

Abstract: Atrazine accumulation, oxidative stress, and defense response in maize seedlings exposed to extraneous atrazine were studied. Accumulation of atrazine in maize increased with increasing exposure concentration. The abscisic acid (ABA) content was positively correlated with the atrazine concentrations in maize roots and shoots (p < 0.05). Hydroxyl radical ( . OH) in maize was determined in vivo with electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Its intensity was positively correlated with atrazine concentration … Show more

“…Stability of triazines and their degradation products has attracted scientific attention because these compounds are present in environment after over 10 years after the withdrawal from the use (Garbin et al 2007; Prosen et al 2007; Hutta et al 2011; Li et al 2012). This is the consequence of the long-term transfer of residues from agricultural areas where these herbicides were previously used.…”

“…For ROS scavenging, antioxidant defence system is utilized by plants. Thus, analysis of level of antioxidants can be used as indirect method to assess herbicide-induced oxidative stress (Li et al 2012 Investigations regarding stress response in V. mungo induced by herbicide are very few and to the best of our knowledge there was also no report on antioxidative defence system in black gram caused by glyphosate herbicide. Varieties under study are widely used in North India, especially in Uttar Pradesh where glyphosate is used on large scale to eradicate weed populations.…”

“…For instance, in the USA, almost 30,000 t of atrazine are applied annually (Hase et al 2008). Because of its intense use, stability and ability to translocate in the environment (Roustan et al 2014;Yixin et al 2014;Nachimuthu et al 2016), atrazine is present in soils and waters worldwide (Hase et al 2008;Merini et al 2009;Feria-Reyes et al 2011;Li et al 2012;Farlin et al 2013;Geng et al 2013;Ji et al 2015;Ouyang et al 2016a). Atrazine is suspected to be an endocrine disruptor and is linked to Parkinson's disease in humans (Filipov et al 2007;Brodeur et al 2009).…”
