Atrial fibrillation risk factors in patients with ischemic stroke

Abstract: Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart arrhythmia. The condition is known to increase the risk of ischemic stroke (IS). Classical risk factors for the development of AF include advanced age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease and lipid metabolism disorders. Importantly, these are also recognized risk factors for ischemic stroke. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate AF risk factors in patients with IS. Material and methods: This is single-centre r… Show more

“…AIS patients included in the study were relatively young-64.4 years old, on average. Although some risk factors are the same for the embolic and thrombotic strokes, AF is leading cause of stroke among older patients (>75 years) [61,62]. In the present study, 40 elder patients (75 years old) were excluded from the study because they were unable to use KM device for unclear reasons.…”

“…There was no statistical significance in age, sex, previous history with hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation ratio [ 6 ], expression level of glycosylated hemoglobin, blood glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein [ 7 ], blood homocysteine, fibrinogen level, preoperative NIHSS score, the Trial of Org in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) [ 8 ] etiological classification of stroke and baseline characteristics ( Appendix ).…”

“…Others are modifiable—hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, diabetes, or atherosclerosis [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Importantly, these AF risk factors are also risk factors for ischemic stroke [ 20 ]. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors for ischemic stroke in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) treated with NOACs.…”
