Atrial Natriuretic Peptide: A Potential Early Therapy for the Prevention of Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome Following Severe Trauma

Abstract: Trauma remains a tremendous medical burden partly because of increased expenditure for the management of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) developed during hospital stay. The intestinal barrier injury continues to be a second insult resulting in MODS which currently lacks efficient strategies for prevention. Recent studies have uncovered multi-organ protective benefits of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in cardiovascular disease. However, the role of ANP in the prevention of MODS following severe tra… Show more

“…A strong immune response to traumatic injury is considered a critical factor in eliciting life-threatening conditions 5 . MODS remains the primary cause of late death after severe trauma, including up to 30% of deaths that are deemed possibly preventable 6 , 7 . Patents with MODS experience increased lengths of stay in intensive care units (ICUs) and may require renal replacement therapy 6 , 7 .…”

Patents with MODS experience increased lengths of stay in intensive care units (ICUs) and may require renal replacement therapy 6 , 7 . Therefore, clinical improvement and survival in patients with major traumatic injuries require early recognition of their conditions and interventions to prevent the development of MODS 6 , 7 .…”

“…16 At this point, the phenomenon of increased oxidative stress coupled with sustained endogenous ANP expression suggests that there may be a positive feedback loop between ANP and oxidative stress proposed by us in a previous study. 17…”
