Atrial septal puncture technique in percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy: Mitral valvuloplasty using the inoue balloon catheter technique

Abstract: Transseptal catheterization is a vital component of percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy. Therefore, a well-executed transseptal catheterization is the key to a safe and successful percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy. Two major problems inherent in atrial septal puncture for percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy are cardiac perforation and puncture of an inappropriate atrial septal site. The former may lead to serious complication of cardiac tamponade and the latter to possible di… Show more

“…Since then, the transseptal puncture technique for diagnostic left heart catheterization or PBMV has been extensively described [5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12]. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of using the tricuspid valve as a landmark for atrial septum puncture and transseptal catheterization.…”

“…The transseptal puncture in majority of the centers is performed under fluoroscopic guidance. 12 Intra-procedural TTE or TEE use in our center is limited to selective patients with difficult TSP, technical problems or any complication.…”

“…PTMV was performed using an Inoue balloon (Toray Medical Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) and the transseptal approach. 17 LA pressure was recorded before and after PTMV. All patients gave informed written consent and all procedures followed institutional ethical standards and guidelines.…”
