Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia with Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation: Clinical and Electrophysiological Features and Predictors of Atrial Fibrillation Recurrence Following Elimination of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentrant Tachycardia

Abstract: In patients with both AVNRT and paroxysmal AF, the recurrence rate of AF after elimination of AVNRT is 28%. Left atrial diameter greater than 40 mm and atrial vulnerability after elimination of AVNRT are independent predictors of AF recurrences in the long term.

“…Previous reports described that patients who have both paroxysmal AF and AVNRT were older than those with AVNRT alone (6,8) and new onset AF occurred in 8-28% of patients during long-term follow-up after slow-pathway ablation of AVNRT (6,13). Consistent with previous reports, new onset AF was observed in 11 older patients (20%), while four younger patients (7.2%) developed paroxysmal AF (p<0.05).…”

“…At the end of the ablation procedure, the inducibility of AVNRT was tested in all patients, with and without isoproterenol infusion. Atrial vulnerability was defined as the induction of AF, lasting at least 30 s, during the electrophysiological stimulation performed without isoproterenol infusion (6).…”

“…It has been documented that AVNRT is associated with paroxysmal AF 22 . A previous report showed a close relationship between SVC AF and AVNRT, namely that SVC triggers were observed in 50% of the patients with AVNRT and AF 23 .…”
