Attachment and Borderline Personality Disorder: Differential Effects on Situational Socio-Affective Processes

Abstract: Insecure attachment and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are defined by similar affective and interpersonal processes. Individuals diagnosed with BPD, however, represent only a subset of those described as insecurely attached, suggesting that attachment may hold broader relevance for socio-affective functioning. Based on a 21-day ecological momentary assessment protocol in a mixed clinical and community sample (N=207) oversampled for BPD, we evaluate the discriminant validity of each construct as it influ… Show more

“…Key to our decisions about sample size was the goal of arriving at stable estimates of within-person effects that were consistent with previous work with similar sampling schemes (e.g., Sadikaj et al, 2013;Lazarus et al, 2018;Kaurin et al, 2020a). Simulations indicated that power would exceed .80 at an alpha level of .05 for each within-person effect with sample sizes of N>50, including tests of main effects and variance components.…”

“…Participants completed a seven-day event-contingent ambulatory assessment protocol and were asked to fill out a survey following any interpersonal interaction that lasted at least 5 minutes. In addition to situational attachment expectations, participants reported on perceptions of their interaction partner's behavior and their own interpersonal behavior and affective experience during interactions (Kaurin et al, 2020a(Kaurin et al, , 2020bWright et al, 2017).…”

“…Relatedly, future work may benefit from expanding EMA-based investigations to include broader clinical constructs with strong ties to antagonism to examine how antagonistic traits may influence effects observed for the broader construct. Some work has been done examining such constructs, including narcissism (e.g., Edershile et al, 2019;Wright et al, 2017) and borderline personality disorder (e.g., Kaurin et al, 2020;Sadikaj et al, 2012). However, to our knowledge, no work has examined psychopathy or antisocial personality disorder using an EMA approach, although there have been studies showing the feasibility of using EMA approaches with adolescents with notable levels of antisocial behavior (Pihet et al, 2017).…”
