Attempt at Numerical Representation of Gas Explosion in a Large Panel Building

Abstract: Analysis of the construction market in Poland and its trends in the recent years indicates a resurgence of prefabricated technology in residential construction. The main period of prefabrication development in Poland was in the 1970s. when it was referred to as large panel. According to a report by Building Research Institute, buildings constructed with large panels are characteristics for their high durability and any damage occurring in the buildings built using the technology can be divided into two groups.… Show more

“…In particular, a significant part of the works of P. Knyziak [8,9] and J. Szulc [10,11] is devoted to various issues of operation of LPS buildings. Also interesting are the results obtained by the authors for the purpose of studying the seismic resistance of panel buildings, and described in papers [12][13][14], as well as modeling of the behavior of panel buildings in the event of a domestic gas explosion [15,16].…”

“…However, even if some systems such as Dutch DC-20 were thought to be deconstructed and re-used, the majority of large panel systems were not designed this way [22]. Additionally, especially during random causes, such as a gas explosion that occurred in Magnitogorsk, Russia [23], concrete panels can be broken, damaged or even crushed.…”

“…Large-panel structures were erected in many countries, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe [ 1 ]. After many years of use, typically around 40–50 years, scientific and professional evaluation should focus on their potential for modernisation [ 2 , 3 , 4 ], analysis of occurring failures [ 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ], and solutions aimed at enhancing their architectural qualities and energy efficiency by altering the facades [ 9 , 10 ]. All of these aspects are interconnected with the necessity of conducting a diagnostic assessment of the structure.…”
