Attention and Response Control in ADHD. Evaluation through Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test.

Abstract: This study assesses attention and response control through visual and auditory stimuli in a primary care pediatric sample. The sample consisted of 191 participants aged between 7 and 13 years old. It was divided into 2 groups: (a) 90 children with ADHD, according to diagnostic (DSM-IV-TR) (APA, 2002) and clinical (ADHD Rating Scale-IV) (DuPaul, Power, Anastopoulos, & Reid, 1998) criteria, and (b) 101 children without a history of ADHD. The aims were: (a) to determine and compare the performance of both groups … Show more

“…This test can be administered to children (ages 6 and older), adolescents and adults. This test has been administered in previous studies in which participated Spanish samples ( Moreno-García, Delgado-Pardo, & Roldán-Blasco, 2015 ). In this research we analyzed the corresponding measures of the visual and auditory Attention Quotients (Full Scale Attention Quotient, Visual Attention Quotient and Auditory Attention Quotient) and visual and auditory Response Control Quotients (Full Scale Response Control Quotient, Visual Response Control Quotient and Auditory Response Control Quotient).…”

“…Interestingly, the administration of methylphenidate as treatment for ADHD improves cognitive functioning by enhancing dopamine and nor-adrenaline transmission in the PFC (Arnsten, 2006), and was also found to reduce theta and increase beta waves (thus normalized TBR; Clarke et al, 2007;Moreno-García, Delgado-Pardo & Roldán-Blasco, 2015). Additionally, a positive relation was found between reduced TBR caused by methylphenidate administration and ADHD symptom reduction (Loo, Cho, Hale, McGough, McCracken & Smalley, 2013).…”

“…IVA/CPT is widely used as an objective diagnostic tool for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults [ 30 ]. It has also been used to evaluate deficits in attention and response control in individuals diagnosed with brain damage, such as stroke and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) [ 31 ].…”
