Attention/memory complaint is correlated with motor speech disorder in Parkinson’s disease

Abstract: BackgroundThe mechanisms underlying the online modulation of motor speech in Parkinson’s disease (PD) have not been determined. Moreover, medical and rehabilitation interventions for PD-associated motor speech disorder (MSD) have a poor long-term prognosis.MethodsTo compare risk factors in PD patients with MSD to those without MSD (non-MSD) and determine predictive independent risk factors correlated with the MSD phenotype, we enrolled 314 PD patients, including 250 with and 64 without MSD. We compared demogra… Show more

“…In addition, central sensory processing abnormalities as well as impaired internal cueing result in reduced awareness of the sound level of the own voice and difficulties with self-regulating adequate loudness (Clark et al, 2014;Ho et al, 2000;Kwan & Whitehill, 2011). Possibly attentional deficits also play a role in difficulties with maintaining adequate loudness in conversation (Liu et al, 2019). Speech symptoms often present quite early in the disease process, contrary to findings in older studies (Rusz et al, 2011(Rusz et al, , 2013Rusz, Hlavnička, et al, 2016.…”

“…Also, evidence from people with cognitive impairment suggests a link between cognitive function and speech production. For example, PD patients with motor speech disorders were associated with greater attention/memory dysfunctions (Liu et al, 2019 ), and individuals with mild cognitive impairment exhibited weaker voice quality and slower articulation rates than healthy controls (Themistocleous et al, 2020 ). Also, Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients exhibited enhanced and prolonged vocal compensations for pitch perturbations that were significantly related to their dysfunctions in working memory and executive control (Ranasinghe et al, 2017 ).…”
