“…There are perhaps even more papers that describe the obstacles to integrating nutrition education into residencies, in the US and Canada. Most of the papers were published in the late 1980s to early 1990s (Gjerde & Sinnott, 1982;Lasswell, 1983;Moore & Larsen, 1983;Creager et al, 1984;Rubenstein & Berfoff, 1984;Kupper & Steiner, 1985;Dappen et al, 1986;Gray et al, 1988;Lopez et al, 1988;Sobal et al, 1988;Nuhlicek et al, 1989;Murphy, 1989;Jack et al, 1990;Figueroa et al, 1991;Feldman, 1991;Kolasa et al, 1992;Lasswell, 1992;Bruer et al, 1992;Lazarus et al, 1993.) Each of these efforts was successful in producing a change in physician knowledge and attitude toward nutrition.…”

“…In the field of nursing, it has been suggested that educational programming focused on increasing nurses' comfort and confidence would improve their ability to deal with issues related to their patients' sexuality (Higgins, Barker, & Begley, 2008;Magnan, Reynolds, & Galvin, 2006). Similarly, studies looking at the role of physicians indicated a need to increase the skills (Boekeloo et al, 1991), comfort (Figueroa et al, 1991;Torkko, Gershman, Crane, Hamman, & Baron, 2000;Yudkowsky, Downing, & Ommert, 2006), and confidence (Figueroa et al, 1991) for physicians to properly address the sexual health needs of their patients. In the classroom, it has been suggested that the comfort and confidence of a teacher to discuss sexual health topics is paramount to successfully educating students on such issues (Ahmed et al, 2006;Haignere, Culhane, Balsley, & Legos, 1996;Hamilton & Gingiss, 1993).…”

“…31 This cohort of senior internal medicine residents is interested in receiving more training in adolescent medicine, which differs from previous studies, in which surveyed residents and practising physicians recognized deficiencies in the area of adolescent medicine, yet reported a low desire for additional training. 24,26,27 Perhaps this cohort's attitudes represent a change in the societal attitudes towards caring for adolescent patients, or it may represent a more diverse group of trainees, e.g., more women or cultural diversity. It may also represent that these residents, while caring for a limited number of adolescent patients, identified gaps in their knowledge that they recognize will be necessary to care for adolescents in the future.…”

“…Previous assessments of internal medicine residents have shown deficiencies in adolescenthistory taking, counselling, and evaluation of psychopathology, 25 and in counselling and management of reproductive health and psychosocial (high-risk behaviour) issues. 26,27 In anticipation of developing a formal internal medicine residency-based adolescent medicine curriculum, in large part focusing on the adolescent interview, a needs assessment was conducted to identify the preparedness of senior residents to effectively communicate with and care for adolescent patients.…”
