Attributable indicators for measuring the level of greenness of cities in developing countries: lessons from Ghana

Abstract: Purpose The advances in green city growth are widely discussed in extant literature. The benefits of green cities to urban development in recent discussions of sustainability and sustainable development are well documented and cannot be overemphasised. Although a growing study on green building development in developing countries has been advanced in literature, there is a paucity of studies that explore green cities in developing countries. Moreover, evidence of studies that have focussed on green cities deve… Show more

“…Prior to data analysis, the significance level was set at 95% confidence interval (based on the five-point Likert scale rating) and a success standard was considered significant if it had a mean ≥ 3.5 - this mean value is consistent with previous literature (cf. Ahadzie, 2007; Owusu-Manu et al , 2020). Where two or more items have the same mean, the one with the lowest SD is assigned the higher ranking.…”

“…The applicability of criteria for selecting an indicator depends solely on the particular indicator and purpose of the indicator as different types of issues, assessment and/or decisions require different types and level of indicators. Indicators can be used for problem solving, policy formulation, policy implementation and evaluation, data variation assessment, environmental conditions or sustainability assessment (Brown, 2009;MacDonald, 2013;Owusu-Manu et al, 2021). Steps for developing appropriate indicator by different researchers are reported in Table 1.…”

“…In contemporary research, various frameworks have been proposed for measuring and developing green cities. Moreover, the pillars/indicators of a green city have been conceptualised into categories: building and construction; energy production and consumption; urban mobility; water production and distribution; water sanitation and waste management (The GoR and GGGI, 2015;Owusu-Manu et al, 2020). Brilhante and Klaas (2018) introduced the Green city conceptual framework (IHS-GCCF) as a harmonized method to measure global green city performance over time.…”
