Attributes of Bio‐Oss® and Moa‐Bone® graft materials in a pilot study using the sheep maxillary sinus model

Abstract: Both materials supported osseous healing and maturation without inflammation. Moa-Bone showed marked osteoclast activity after 4 and 6 weeks and demonstrated positive attributes for grafting, if complete remodeling of the graft within the site is desired. Further optimization of Moa-Bone for maxillofacial applications is warranted.

“…In a case report, a biopsy taken 12 months after maxillary sinus grafting with Bio-Oss revealed the persistence of particles with no evidence of resorption. 67 In this context, Smith et al 77 also revealed that the MNGCs at the surfaces of Bio-Oss were TRAP-positive but no resorption lacunae have been detected.…”

“…The type of NB was mostly lamellar, suggesting that the grafted site was relatively mature. In a recent study using the same model (Smith et al, ), grafted sinuses with BBM demonstrated a similar histologic appearance after 12 weeks of healing. Alayan, Vaquette, Saifzadeh, Hutmacher, and Ivanovski () documented an increase in the lamellar bone fraction from 8 to 16 weeks of healing.…”

“…Pure collagen as a sponge was used as a negative control. The study objective was to analyze the outcomes of this sinus grafting histologically and histomorphometrically, using a well‐established sheep animal model (Haas et al, ; Smith et al, ).…”
