“…This finding is consistent with the results obtained in previous studies which suggest that, when compared to women, men: (a) are more accepting of sexual abuse myths (Ashton, 1982;Blumberg & Lester, 1991;Dye & Roth, 1990;Field, 1978aField, , 1978bReilly, Lott, Caldwell, & DeLuca, 1992;Spanos, Dubreuil, & Gwynn, 1991-1992Ward, 1988;White & Kurpius, 1999;Xenos & Smith, 2001); (b) are more likely to attribute blame to an incest victim (Doughty & Schneider, 1987;Green, 1987;Jackson & Ferguson, 1983;Morris, 1989); and (c) are less likely to believe children's allegations of sexual abuse (Bottoms & Goodman, 1989;O'Donohue & Elliot, 1992).…”

“…In Doughty and Schneider's (1987) study of incest blame among trainee and registered psychologists, attributions of blame were found to decrease as a function of education, with blame scores for men being significantly higher than those for women. In a similar vein, Everson, Boat, Bourg, and Roberston (1996) found that mental-health professionals were significantly less skeptical about children's allegations of child sexual abuse than were judges and law enforcement officials, while Herman and Hirschman (1981) noted gender differences in the way counselors perceive incest; with male counselors tending to be more judgmental of incest victims than were female counselors.…”

“…Caution should be used in interpreting the results gained by use of the new mother-blaming items, which were drawn from clinical descriptions published over a decade ago (Forward & Buck, 1978;Justice & Justice, 1979;McIntyre, 1981;Peters, 1976), before the influence of current feminists. Doughty and Schneider (1987) also reported more situational blame by men than women. These scores for both genders, however, were primarily in the "disagree" range of the situational blame scale.…”

“…Adams (1985), Doughty and Schneider (1987), and Jackson and Ferguson (1983) all reported that men blamed the victim more than women. However, in the prior research and present study, the mean scores for participants of both sexes generally were in the "disagree" end of the victim-blaming items.…”
