“…Michlitsch and Frankel found support for the four-factor structure of the 25 rationally derived items. Internal consistency for the subscales has been found to range from .56 to .86 (McCracken et al, 1997;Michlitsch & Frankel, 1989), which is generally higher than other instruments used to measure Brickman et als theory (cf. Karuza, Zevon, Gleason, Karuza, & Nash, 1990;Tracey, 1988).…”

“…Unlike other attribution theories, Brickman et als theory accounts for beliefs about not only the cause of a problem but also its solution. Because problem solving is such a central component to counseling, Brickman et als theory has been judged to be important to both the process and the outcome of counseling (Atkinson, Worthington, Dana, & Good, 1991;Endlich, 1989;Karuza, Zevon, Rabinowitz, & Brickman, 1982;McCracken, Hayes, & Dell, 1997;Tracey, 1988;Worthington & Atkinson, 1993, 1996. Brickman et als (1982) theory describes a four-cell taxonomy (i.e., four models) of high and low responsibility attributions for the causes of and solutions to problems.…”

“…Support has been found for the four-factor structure from the 25 rationally derived items. Internal consistency for the subscales has been reported to range from .56 to .86 (McCracken, Hayes, & Dell, 1997;Michlitsch & Frankel, 1989). Wall and Hayes (1999) slightly modified the HCOM to use with clinical populations.…”

“…For example, elderly subjects using a compensatory model were more likely to seek help from a friend than from a professional (Ray, Racit, & MacLean, 1992). When older and younger subjects' responsibility attributions are compared for the causes and solutions to memory-vs. weight-related problems, older subjects were seen as less responsible for the problem and solution of a memory problem, but not for help seekers with a weight problem (McCracken, Hayes, & Dell, 1997). The study also found that the basic factor structure of problem and solution responsibility supported the four categories.…”
