Atypical Dermatophilus Congolensis Infection in a Three-Year-Old Pony

Abstract: Abstract. Dermatophilosis caused by Dermatophilus congolensis causes exudative dermatitis in a variety of species. The infection is generally limited to the cutaneous tissues, where infection is acquired from the environment and bacteria penetrate into keratinized epithelium through epithelial disruption. A 3-year-old pony filly was examined for enlarging mandibular lymph nodes during the preceding 10 months. Biopsy of the node revealed mixed and granulomatous inflammation and thick, filamentous Gram-positive … Show more

“…Dermatophilus congolensis is a Gram-positive coccobacillary actinomycete that causes an exsudative dermatitis in a variety of species, most notably in ruminants and horses, although rare infections occur in cats, dogs, and humans [1, 15]. It has a worldwide distribution but is more prevalent in the humid tropics and subtropics [133].…”

“…In temperate countries, sheep and goats are commonly affected and a sporadic proliferative pyogranulomatous pododermatitis has been seen in alpacas in Australia (Horadagoda unpublished data). Apart from skin infections, in rare instances, the organism can cause pyogranulomatous infections in the lymph nodes (Byrne, Rand, McElliott, Samitz, & Brault, ). To the author's knowledge, this is the first report of D. congolensis associated with a case of bronchopneumonia in an animal.…”
