Atypical parkinsonian syndromes in a North African tertiary referral center

Abstract: Introduction Data on epidemiology of atypical parkinsonian syndromes (APS) in North African countries are limited. Our objective was to study the epidemiological features of APS in a Tunisian population. Methods We conducted a 17‐year retrospective cross‐sectional descriptive study in the Department of Neurology at Razi University Hospital. We included all patients responding to consensus diagnosis criteria of APS. We recorded demographic and clinical data. Group differ… Show more

“…In this study, we depicted the cognitive profile of Tunisian patients with MSA and provided first data on clinical and genetic determinants of CI. As reported in our recent epidemiological study on Tunisian APS [ 34 ], we noted a predominance of female gender and MSA-P motor subtype mostly of PIGD phenotype.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, only few studies have been published on APS in Africa and even less on their genetic determinants. 13 As reported in our recent epidemiological study on Tunisian APS, 13 the age of onset of Parkinsonism was the most decisive feature for differential diagnosis between APS subgroups in our cohort.…”

“…We recently reported a large Tunisian cohort of APS and showed their relative frequency among Parkinsonian syndromes. Age of onset of Parkinsonian syndrome was the most decisive feature for differential diagnosis with sex risk variability in developing APS 13. However, the genetic profile of Tunisian APS is still understudied and should be investigated in greater depth in order to enhance the ability to discriminate between these diseases and their different phenotypes.…”

“…In the present study, we classified the patients into three clinical subtypes according to initial symptoms and highlighted the characteristics of each subtype. To our knowledge, this large cohort of DLB patients is the first Tunisian and African study describing the clinical and cognitive features, genetic and prognostic factors of DLB according to clinical subtypes [11].…”
