Atypical thyroid follicles arising from an ultimobranchial-like cyst in a postnatal canine thyroid gland

Abstract: While investigating the intrinsic vasculature of the canine thyroid gland, atypical thyroid follicles were observed histologically, arising from a postnatal thyroid cyst of unknown origin, in stained sections of a male, 1-year-old, mesaticephalic dog. The animal was anesthetized, bled, killed by injection of Toxital directly into the heart, and perfused with 10% buffered neutral formalin solution. The thyroid tissue was fixed, embedded in paraffin, sectioned serially, and mounted on glass slides. Concordant wi… Show more

“…UBB as well as thyroid follicles in senile rabbits underwent cystic degeneration and numerous cell debris as well as many macrophage cells were recorded in their lumina. Similar degenerative changes were also demonstrated in the UBB of many other animals as rats (Conde et al, 1992), dogs (Booth and Gloshal, 1978) and buffaloes (Elwan, 1994).…”

“…Cordier et al [1976] believed that these cysts in dwarf mice are the endodermal remnants of the UBB after the migration of parafollicular cells. However, the final fate of ultimobranchial cells is yet to be deter mined in mammals [Booth and Ghoshal, 1978],…”

“…These cysts, which in the pres ent paper will be called 'unusual follicles', have been given various names by several investigators [Watzka, 1933;Axelrad and Leblond, 1955;Sehe, 1966;Calvert and Isler, 1970;Neve and Woilman, 1971;Woilman and Neve, 1971;Calvert, 1972;Das, 1976, 1978;Booth and Ghoshal, 1978]. In the house shrew (Suncus murinus), it is interesting to note that these cysts are invariably restricted to the internal parathyroid .…”
