Au–Pd bimetallic nanoparticles supported on a high nitrogen-rich ordered mesoporous carbon as an efficient catalyst for room temperature Ullmann coupling of aryl chlorides in aqueous media

Abstract: An ionic liquid derived highly nitrogen-rich mesoporous carbon supported Au-Pd alloy was found to be an efficient and recyclable catalyst for the Ullmann coupling reaction of various aryl chlorides at room temperature in aqueous media.

“…The BET surface areas of CMK‐3 and PtNiB/CMK‐3 were calculated as 965.43 and 853.39 m 2 g −1 , respectively, with a respective total pore volume of 1.32 and 1.17 cm 3 g −1 . These results follow from the presence of PtNiB NPs within the interior walls of the CMK‐3 leading to a decrease in specific surface area . Nevertheless, the specific surface area and pore volume of PtNiB/CMK‐3 remained adequate for mass transfer …”

“…It is well‐known that NaOH and KOH are good bases for the facilitation of the hydride transfer . The concerted processes were the hydride transfer from the oxidation of EtOH to acetaldehyde, leading to alter electron density at catalytic active metal centers and facilitate the carbon‐chlorine bond cleavage . Next, adsorbed phenyl moieties on the surface were coupled to yield biaryl.…”

“…The recyclability of Pd@IFMC for the Ullmann reaction of 4‐iodoanisole took place efficiently during five runs with yields in the range 99 to 85 %. The same group have used an ionic liquid derived nitrogen‐rich mesoporous carbon for supporting Au−Pd bimetallic NPs, AuPd@NMCI, as an efficient catalyst for Ullmann coupling reaction of aryl halides (Br and Cl) at rt . The Ullmann reaction was carried out with 0.7 to 1.2 mol % Pd and a 2.8 : 1 Au/Pd ratio, K 2 CO 3 as base in EtOH/H 2 O (1 : 4).…”

[170] The Ullmann reaction was carried out with 0.7 to 1.2 mol % Pd and a 2.8 : 1 Au/Pd ratio, K 2 CO 3 as base in EtOH/H 2 O (1 : 4). AuPd@NMCI was reused for five runs without any significant loss in activity in the Ullmann coupling of chlorobenzene to give biphenyl.…”
