“…Several studies resulted in differences between the sensory evoked cortical potentials of schizophrenic patients and healthy controls. Amplitude values of auditory evoked potentials (AEP) were found to be diminished in schizophrenie patients (Iones et al , 1965;Iones and Callaway 1970;Saletu et al, 1971Saletu et al, a, 1973Roth and Cannon, 1972;Shagass et al, 1977;Lifshitz et al, 1979;Roth et al, 1980). Shorter latency measures were also reported (Saletu et al, 1971a;Shagass et al, 1977).…”

“…A further issue that merits discussion is the exact nature of the data set used to estimate the amount of drift and the quantity of data to be included in this set. The procedure described in the present paper suggests the reliance on prestimulus data and differs in this regard from the procedure described by Lifshitz et al (1979), who include both prestimulus and poststimulus data points. The consequences of this choice will vary to some extent with the exact nature of both prestimulus and poststimuius data, but as a rule the inclusion of only prestimulus information is to be preferred.…”

“…This is analogous to a time constant setting of approximately 4 sec. While there is little doubt that the procedure eliminated prestimulus drift, it is also likely that it attenuated the slow wave response which developed during the long interstimulus interval (8 sec) they were investigating, Klorman (1975), Buchsbaum and Coppola (1974), and Lifshitz, Susswein, and Lee (1979) have ail reported variations on a regression procedure which they used to eliminate statistically the contamination due to baseline drift. Unfortunately.…”

“…The AEP may also be affected by the interaction of time and medication. For example, in a cross-sectional study Lifshitz et al [ 10] report that the length of time that a psychoactive drug is administered may affect the AEP, as may the length of time of withdrawal. …”
