Auditory orienting and inhibition of return in schizophrenia: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study

Abstract: Patients with schizophrenia (SP) exhibit deficits in both attentional reorienting and inhibition of return (IOR) during visual tasks. However, it is currently unknown whether these deficits are supramodal in nature and how these deficits relate to other domains of cognitive dysfunction. In addition, the neuronal correlates of this pathological orienting response have not been investigated in either the visual or auditory modality. Therefore, thirty SP and 30 healthy controls (HC) were evaluated with an extensi… Show more

“…For Task 1 hemodynamic response functions were explicitly modeled for single (S1) and pairs (S1 + S2) of identical (IT; “gating-out” redundant information) or non-identical (NT; “gating-in” novel information) tones (Mayer et al 2013 ). For Task 2, cues presented to the left or right ear (100 ms, 2000 Hz tone pip) correctly predicted the location of the targets (100 ms, 1000 Hz tone pip) in 50% of the trials (Abbott et al 2012 ). Participants pressed a button with their right middle finger for tones on the right headphone and a button with their right index finger for tones on their left.…”

“…Fifty-seven healthy adult volunteers were recruited to participate in the current study through community advertisements. Data from a subset of the current cohort were previously published in a study examining orienting in patients with schizophrenia ( Abbott et al, 2012 ). One participant was identified as a motion outlier (more than three times the interquartile range on 2 of 6 framewise displacement parameters) and was removed from subsequent analyses.…”

“…Due to its capability of producing excellent quality and high-resolution images, allowing a fast scan time as well as no need of radiochemicals, MRI has been proved as the most important modality in both clinical and research settings. [247][248][249][250][251][252][253][254][255][256][257] Therefore, integrating this advanced technique into cell (especially tumor cell) imaging will greatly boost the development of diagnostics.…”
