Auditory Outcomes with Hearing Rehabilitation in Children with Unilateral Hearing Loss: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Objective Options for management of unilateral hearing loss (UHL) in children include conventional hearing aids, bone-conduction hearing devices, contralateral routing of signal (CROS) aids, and frequency-modulating (FM) systems. The objective of this study was to systematically review the current literature to characterize auditory outcomes of hearing rehabilitation options in UHL. Data Sources PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to January 2016. Manual searches … Show more

“…Two recent systematic reviews have summarized studies of hearing rehabilitation for children with UHL. Appachi et al evaluated auditory outcomes from various modalities of hearing rehabilitation, including FM systems, conventional hearing aids, CROS hearing aids, and bone-conduction hearing devices [ 36 ••]. FM systems were found to be beneficial for speech recognition in noise, conventional hearing aids demonstrated trends toward improvement in speech perception, and CROS aids had mixed auditory outcomes.…”

“…16,30 Appropriate ENT treatment and follow-up for hearing loss including hearing aids from early childhood can help address these concerns, particularly in language development. 31 As learning difficulties are also known to be a concern, the importance of supporting families in school advocacy was highlighted, such as ensuring children have preferential seating accommodations, auditory support, and FM system use. 3,5 Correspondingly, speech and language difficulties were also described as impacting participants in multiple settings.…”

“…It is noteworthy that the scope of these three systematic reviews [42,[44][45] was limited either to auditory outcomes of hearing rehabilitation or consequences of UHI to IQ or speech and language development of children. Further, in some reviews, articles were included in which not only UHI but also bilateral HI was covered.…”
