Augmented reality system for aiding engineering design process of machinery systems

Abstract: The paper presents the application of augmented reality for aiding product design and development of machinery systems. Augmented reality technology integrates an interactive computer-generated word with an interactive real word in such a way that they appear as one environment. AR technology can enhance a user's perception of the real world with information that is not actually part of the scene but is relevant to the user's present activity. Presented in the AR system is a mode for changing views of data -es… Show more

“…MBE and related 3D model metadata can be successfully integrated within handheld device application to provide a more effective work rendition, ensuring that activities (such as design, planning, and machining) are correctly performed the first time without the need for subsequent re-work and modifications [35]. Undoubtedly, AR systems are changing how data is viewed, especially on 3D models, which allow the user to understand different product perspectives in a more comprehensive way [36]. As a result, there is an urgent need for proper approaches involving AR, enabling the user to effectively verify solutions relative to real scenes/objects when provided with a complete set of functional information (e.g., PMIs, dimensions, surface finish).…”

“…AR technology typically provides visualization aids that bridge the gap between physical prototypes and digital computer models. AR technology offers solutions and benefits in numerous application areas such as space training 9 , medical education 10 , design and manufacturing [11][12][13] , visualization training in early child education 14 , assembly and maintenance training 15 , entertainment 16 , and military training 17 . An MR experience is one where the user is placed in an interactive setting that is either real with virtual component augmentation (AR), or virtual settings with real-world augmentation (augmented virtuality-AV).…”
