Augmenting full colour-fused multi-band night vision imagery with synthetic imagery in real-time

Abstract: We present the design and first field trial results of an all-day all-weather enhanced and synthetic-fused multi-band colour night vision surveillance and observation system. The system augments a fused and dynamic three-band natural-colour night vision image with synthetic 3D imagery in real-time. The night vision sensor suite consists of three cameras, sensitive in, respectively, the visual (400-700 nm), the near-infrared (NIR, 700-1000 nm) and the long-wave infrared (LWIR, 8-14 mm) bands of the electromagne… Show more

“…The system combines (fuses) the three camera signals in real-time in a false-color RGB signal. It has the capability to perform color remapping using either pre-recorded lookup tables [79] or by deriving the color mapping in real-time from synthetic imagery or Google Earth data [80]. As a result the system provides dynamic imagery with a realistic color appearance in conditions of low visibility (low light levels, smoke).…”

“…The process differs from system to system but often input images are fused into a false color image. Displaying three-band natural color images has been the goal of some recent approaches, and color transfer using a reference color image such as a synthetic, daytime, or any other image source has been a common solution [1][2][3][4][5][6].…”
