Augmenting the landscape scene: students as participatory evaluators of mobile geospatial technologies

Abstract: This paper provides a two-phase study to compare alternative techniques for augmenting landscape scenes on geography fieldtrips. The techniques were: a pre-prepared acetate overlay; a custom-designed mobile field guide; a locative media app on a smartphone; a virtual globe on a tablet PC; a head-mounted virtual reality display, and a geo-wand style mobile app. In one field exercise the first five techniques were compared through analysis of interviews and student video diaries, combined with direct observation… Show more

“…In the past, low-illumination image quality enhancement algorithms were rarely used in real-time video communication. There are two biggest reasons [36]. One is that due to the limitations of night photography, more noise will be generated, and the noise will be amplified after the brightening process, resulting in more images in the final image.…”

“…The processing speed of the analog image is fast, but its accuracy is low and its flexibility is poor. It has no judgment function and non-linear processing function, which is not conducive to processing by the computer, and it is not convenient for transmission and storage [4]. Later, with the development of technology, computers gradually became popular, and people began to use computers to process images [5].…”

“…For example, an attacker spoofed a fan controller by sending a false message that caused the fan to stop running, resulting in overheating and damage to the engine. Damage to the engine in turn causes a series of devices to shut down, resulting in huge financial losses and potentially even a major accident that threatens human safety [4]. For communication security reasons, some communication networks are independent of external networks.…”

“…Considering the works on the application of virtual reality in teaching geography (Chen, 2006;Cho, & Chun, 2019;Detyna, & Kadiri, 2019;Geng et al, 2019;Priestnall et al, 2019;Turan et al, 2018;Zhang et al, 2018), we often see a discussion of the problems of using this technology in schools for teaching children, while the preparation of teachers for using VR is missed. However, in one of the latest works (Cho & Chun, 2019), where the experience of VR use by Korean teachers of geography is considered, the authors discuss the teacher's professional development program.…”

“…Another article (Priestnall et al, 2019) focuses on the use of VR for studying the types and forms of landscapes through virtual excursions. There were carried out an in-depth analysis, the result of which are recommendations on the types and forms of application of this technology, as well as highlighted disadvantages.…”
