White Anglo patriarchal possession in organizations: Unequal vertical career progressions among Anglo White & non‐Anglo White highly skilled immigrant women

“…The Australian space is not neutral as it is formed by coloniality and engrained with white patriarchal sovereignty (Moreton‐Robinson, 2004) where difference in gender within Indigenous peoples was denied (O’Sullivan, 2021). Indeed, the country has inherited its patriarchal institutions from the colonial empire (Connell, 2014; Huggins & Huggins, 2018) while maintaining its interests by the exclusion of Indigenous sovereignty (Moreton‐Robinson, 2004, 2015). Thus, due to the British colonization, an Anglo gendered order operates to discriminate in favor of itself in the Australian labor market.…”

“…Through this study, I demonstrate how the dichotomy is not sufficient to explain the racial/ ethnic /gendered dynamics lived by skilled immigrant women as it does not enquire into the nature of “racialized”/gendered conditions in the working spaces. Further, it does not consider their role in reproducing colonizing relations within the Australian context, where patriarchal white sovereignty remains a regime of power derived from the illegal act of appropriation of Indigenous lands (Huggins, 1998; Huggins & Huggins, 2018; Moreton‐Robinson, 2004). Yet, following Huggins (1998), Moreton‐Robinson (2004), and Frankenberg's (1993) work, I argue that Whiteness needs to be interrogated to understand how it shapes the working experience of white Anglo women.…”
