Auricular Acupressure Combined with Self-Help Intervention for Treating Chronic Tinnitus: A Longitudinal Observational Study

Abstract: Tinnitus is a phantom sound perception in the ears or head and can arise from many different medical disorders. Currently, there is no standard treatment for tinnitus that reliably reduces tinnitus. Individual patients reported that acupressure at various points around the ear can help to reduce tinnitus, which was investigated here. With this longitudinal observational study, we report a systematic evaluation of auricular acupressure on 39 tinnitus sufferers, combined with a self-help smartphone app. The part… Show more

“…It is possible that the availability and usage of these devices differs between countries, which might have influenced individual tinnitus perception. That hearing aids or cochlear implants as well as other influences on and in the ear can have an impact has previously been shown in other studies [ 46 ]. Therefore, we will include hearing aids or cochlear implants as factors in future studies.…”

“…This means patients receiving tDCS, in whichever application form, as well as most of the control group receiving sham tDCS, improved. Schlee et al [71], in contrast, concluded that the use of an acupressure device in conjunction with a self-help smartphone app caused a significant negative linear trend for both tinnitus loudness (P<.001; Cohen d=0.861) and tinnitus distress (P=.005; Cohen d=0.478). Table 5 provides detailed information of the included studies.…”

“…Only 2 studies [70,71] performed research concerning the use of a self-help device as a telerehabilitation treatment form. Hyvärinen et al [70] examined the use of a self-administrable form of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for a sample of 43 participants with chronic tinnitus.…”

“…Additionally, the app contains an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) module that tracks changes in tinnitus symptoms on a daily basis. The feasibility of EMA to measure the course of tinnitus has already been investigated in several studies [ 23 , 24 , 35 ] and has also been used to evaluate tinnitus treatments [ 36 ].…”
