Australian Smokers’ Sensory Experiences and Beliefs Associated with Menthol and Non-Menthol Cigarettes

Abstract: Many current smokers incorrectly believe that menthol cigarettes are less harmful, likely due to the biological and sensory effects of menthol, which can lead smokers to have favourable sensory experiences. In this study, we measured the extent to which Australian smokers associate certain sensory experiences with smoking menthol and non-menthol cigarettes, and their beliefs about how damaging and enjoyable they find cigarettes with each of these sensory experiences. “…Capsule cigarettes appeal more to susceptible non-smokers than to young adults who smoke;15 the combination of menthol flavours with capsule technologies may thus enhance the appeal of smoking and encourage experimentation among non-smoking young people. Beliefs that capsule cigarettes improve sensory experiences may compound incorrect perceptions of menthol as a less harmful variant thus facilitating uptake and potentially impeding cessation 13 15. For these reasons, we suggest policy makers take a holistic approach when reviewing attributes that enhance the appeal of tobacco products and consider interactions between flavours and flavour delivery mechanisms, such as capsules.…”

“…Collectively, this evidence suggests that menthol facilitates smoking initiation and nicotine dependence while making cessation more difficult and fostering false beliefs about the relative harm of menthol products 9–13. Disallowing menthol use as a characterising flavour would reduce the appeal of smoking to young people, thus decreasing smoking initiation, while also encouraging smoking cessation among people who currently smoke these cigarettes 6…”
