This collection of interventions unites academics hailing from Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and the United States, reintroducing discussions on authoritarian state tactics and coercion into urban renewal dialogues within urban studies. During our discussions, it became apparent that urban authoritarian tactics are crucial in contemporary state‐led gentrification efforts. In this introduction to the series, we aim to merge research on authoritarian measures within neoliberalism with the literature concerning urban transformation and gentrification. By doing so, we bring urban studies into wider discussions regarding the overarching trend of authoritarianism on a global scale within sociology, political economy and international studies.

This article examines the reception of the Iranian state's authoritarian discourse by the Italian far right to interrogate the mechanisms of authoritarian diffusion from the point of view of the receiving actors. Coding Iran's state propaganda and searching for overlaps and resonances with the far right's discourse, this article argues that the receiving audience selectively translates the content coming from Iran for the Italian public with the goal of reinforcing its own political discourse. The article contributes to the debate on authoritarian diffusion by providing fresh empirical findings from a rarely studied case study and by shifting the focus to political discourse and narratives. This article also foregrounds the agency of the receiving audience, rather than the authoritarian state's, with the goal of interrogating the resources and infrastructures that enable diffusion, rather than the motivation or the success of the ‘sending’ authoritarian state. This article expands the understanding of complex dynamics of authoritarian diffusion and contributes to examine the establishment of transnational connections between state and non-state illiberal actors in the era of ‘sovranism’ and right-wing populism.

Mit der Wahl der Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vollzog sich in Indien eine Abkehr vom inklusiven Neoliberalismus hin zu einer Vertiefung des neoliberalen Projekts durch Sozialabbau und der Verbreitung einer hindunationalistischen Ideologie. Dieser Aufsatz entwickelt zunächst das Konzept des neoliberalen autoritären Urbanismus, der eine spezifische Phase kapitalistischer Raumproduktion bezeichnet, welche kapitalistische Verhältnisse über autoritäre, nationalistische und antidemokratische Elemente ausweitet. Anschließend wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwieweit sich Indiens autoritär-populistischer Wandel in seiner Enteignungspolitik und der Hinwendung zu marktbasierten Enteignungsinstrumenten niederschlägt und diese prägt. Am Beispiel der Wiederentdeckung von Land Pooling Schemes (LPS) werden drei Befunde diskutiert: (1) Die Abkehr von materiellen und rechtlichen Zugeständnissen für die Agrarbevölkerung. (2) Die Verschleierung der gewaltvollen Dimension der Urbanisierung über die Ausweitung ökonomischer Zwänge. (3) Die Ausweitung einer diskursiven Inklusion der enteigneten Landeigentümer_innen, welche widerstreitende Interessen zwischen Agrar- und urbanen Kapitalfraktionen zugunsten einer nationalen Einheit teilweise einzufangen sucht. Insgesamt zeigt sich, wie die indische Enteignungspolitik mit LPS eine potenziell hegemoniefördernde Funktion einnimmt, indem sie durch die Ausweitung und gleichzeitige Verschleierung von Zwang die landbesitzende Agrarbevölkerung nicht nur zum Verkauf ihres Landes und zur Teilnahme an städtischen Verwertungsprozessen aufruft, sondern sie gleichermaßen ideologisch und materiell untrennbar an das Schicksal der urbanen Nation zu binden sucht.
