Autobiographical memory specificity, depression, and trauma in bipolar disorder

Abstract: The findings of this study suggest a relationship between early psychosocial adversity and current inter-episode depressive mood in BD. In addition, levels of overgeneral AM are similar to that reported for depression, but are unrelated to childhood trauma, current inter-episode depressive mood, or BD severity. Clinical implications include the importance of routine assessment of trauma in BD and the need for adjunctive evidenced-based psychological therapies.

“…This is in keeping with previous research both in the same geographical area (Maguire et al 2008;Mowlds et al 2010) and elsewhere (Leverich et al 2002;Garno et al 2005;Moskvina et al 2007). The parental bonding category of 'affectionless control', characterised by 'low care and high protection', was the most common parenting experience.…”

“…A few studies have explored the association between childhood trauma and outcomes in BD, concluding that a trauma history is associated with an earlier onset of illness (McIntyre et al 2008), increased hospital admissions, higher levels of inter-episode depression (Maguire et al 2008;Mowlds et al 2010), faster cycling frequencies and an increased number of BD episodes (Nolen et al 2004). Childhood trauma experiences have also been associated with increased rates of suicidal attempts (Brown et al 2005;McIntyre et al 2008), auditory hallucinations (Hammersley et al 2003), mania (Levitan et al 1998) and co-morbid alcohol and substance abuse (Leverich et al 2002;Brown et al 2005).…”

“…The trauma during childhood is delicate to handle, even when addressed by a specific instrument as CTQ, it is known that the accounts of these experiences are influenced by memory bias, resulting in underestimation or overestimation of this exhibition. The other side, the findings related a correlation between the early beginning of mood disorders and the scores of CTQ 30 as well as the lack of relationship between autobiographical memory and childhood trauma scores 32 .…”

“…The possible influence of this variable on the retrieval of emotional memories, more specifically of AMs associated to cues with positive and negative valences, has been already in dicated by Tzemou and Birchwood (2007). However, not all authors obtained results consistent with this hypothe sis (Mowlds et al, 2009). The activation of strategic in hibition to avoid harmful memories in the VR context seems quite unlikely.…”

“…Other authors (Tze mou & Birchwood, 2007) proposed that overgeneral memory result from the strategic inhibition and func tional avoidance of traumatic events. However, this af fect regulation hypothesis was not supported by Mowlds et al (2009), as these authors did not find a significant relation between childhood trauma and AM specificity. For Mansell and Lam (2004), the difficulties in the re trieval of specific AMs arise from the discordant memo ries of goalsrelated activities, and for Boulanger et al (2013) and Kim et al (2014) these difficulties are related to executive function impairment.…”
