Autoimmune Retinopathy and Antiretinal Antibodies

Abstract: Purpose: To review the current state for diagnosis and management of autoimmune retinopathy. Methods: A review of the literature was performed, encompassing autoimmune retinopathy including paraneoplastic retinopathy (cancer-associated retinopathy, melanoma-associated retinopathy, and bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation) and non-paraneoplastic autoimmune retinopathy. Based on this review, current principles and techniques for diagnosis and the treatments reported for autoimmune retinopathy are dis… Show more

“…Ocular signs often precede the onset of systemic symptoms. [9][10][11][12][13][14] In the present case, the autofluorescence and the fluorescein patterns are consistent with the diagnosis of BDUMP. There was no obvious serous retinal detachment, but the scans available for review were performed through the fovea, and not at the level of the lesions.…”

“…Autoimmune retinopathies (AIR) are rare but devastating autoimmune diseases in humans, characterized by the sudden onset of severe visual deficits (or complete blindness), extinguished retinal electrical activity, relatively normal fundus appearance, and presence of serum retinal autoantibodies 9‐11 . AIRs can develop as a form of paraneoplastic syndrome (ie, CAR: cancer‐associated retinopathy; MAR: melanoma‐associated retinopathy), or in the absence of cancer (nonparaneoplastic autoimmune retinopathies: npAIR) 12‐15 .…”

“…These tests are mainly available in research facilities. Lack of an accepted gold standard for antiretinal antibodies detection alone makes their use in the diagnosis challenging 9 10. Postmortem examination of eyes with CAR have shown nearly complete loss of photoreceptor outer and inner segments and the outer nuclear layer in the retina 6…”
