Autoimmune Vasculitis Causing Acute Bilateral Lower Limb Paralysis

Abstract: Autoimmune vasculitis is an autoimmune disease that causes various systemic symptoms, such as fever, fatigue, joint pain, and night sweats. Its clinical course depends on the severity of the inflammation, which can cause acute clinical progression of symptoms. Moreover, when the inflammation of the arteries occurs in the deeper parts of the body, a biopsy may be difficult to perform. Here, we report a case of autoimmune vasculitis in an elderly man who visited our hospital with a chief complaint of muscle pain… Show more

“…Inflammation generally progresses slowly, and the reduction in Hb levels is rarely severe [ 8 ]. However, older adults and patients with dementia may develop severe anemia without any subjective symptoms such as pain [ 16 , 17 ]. Older patients with vague symptoms require comprehensive care using systemic approaches in rural contexts [ 18 ].…”

“…Physicians may focus on the present symptoms and treatments while patients may insist on the present symptoms without a previous chronic clinical course. In diagnosing EGE, physicians and patients should also focus on chronic clinical courses to prevent the progression of the disease to cancer and vasculitis due to continual inflammation and modify their help-seeking behaviors according to their symptoms [13,14].…”

“…However, within one week, the symptoms progressed drastically from the tongue to the extremities, causing difficulties in walking. The clinical course of mononeuritis multiplex varies, and some cases caused by vasculitis from autoimmune and infectious diseases may be progressive [ 5 , 12 ]. Precise follow-up and prompt treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins and steroids should be initiated to prevent disease progression.…”

“…The progression of mononeuritis multiplex symptoms varies depending on the human body's etiology and immunological reactions [ 3 , 4 ]. Severe cases may involve multi-extremity paralysis, which should be treated with intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, steroids, and plasma exchange, according to the etiology [ 2 , 5 ]. Thus, effective treatment requires the detection of etiology and rapid treatment.…”
