Autologous Plasma Rich in Growth Factors Eyedrops in Refractory Cases of Ocular Surface Disorders

Abstract: Purpose: Preliminary information about the safety and efficacy of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) eyedrops in the treatment of refractory cases of diverse ocular surface disorders (OSDs) is presented here. Material and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included cases with OSDs refractory to previous treatment with conventional treatments or autologous serum or cyclosporine, and treated with PRGF eyedrops. The signs and symptoms of ocular surface disorders [using the ocular surface disease index (OS… Show more

“…In this study, a statistically signi cant decrease (p < 0.01) was observed in different variables measured such as the percentage of the corneal defect, corneal staining area, corneal staining density, VAS frequency, VAS severity, degree of dry eye disease and OSDI. Similar results were found in previous publications where the use of PRGF alone improved the values of discomfort in patients with ocular surface disorders 1,20 . These successful results could be in part due to the PRGF characteristics like its analgesic or anti-in ammatory effect, which has been widely demonstrated in the previous studies 24 .…”

“…The ocular surface involves structures like the cornea, limbus and conjunctiva, which protect the ocular integrity against external pathogens under normal conditions 1 . However, there are noninfectious disorders that can generate lesions with a variable severity grade from super cial keratitis to ulcers and corneal melting, which can permanently affect the visual acuity in many cases 2 .…”

“… 17 A better control on inflammation could contribute to a higher treatment adherence in patients with glaucoma. Last but not least, PRGF eye drops have shown clinical efficacy in patients with moderate-to-severe dry eye, diverse epithelial defects, and corneal ulcers; 18 , 19 , 10 , 28 30 the efficacy and safety of PRGF eye drops in the treatment of neurotrophic keratitis have also been demonstrated. 31 …”

“…[8][9][10] In recent years, PRGF eye drops have been widely used in the treatment of several ocular surface diseases, including dry eye, corneal ulcers, and persistent epithelial defects. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] The biochemical and biophysical properties of PRGF eye drops like pH, osmolarity, proteins, and growth factors content, which are similar to the artificial tears, are responsible for the successful results obtained in the treatment of these different ocular pathologies. 19,20 Ocular surface disorders are usually chronic diseases that require medium-or long-term treatment.…”
