Automated Aircraft Dent Inspection via a Modified Fourier Transform Profilometry Algorithm

Abstract: The search for dents is a consistent part of the aircraft inspection workload. The engineer is required to find, measure, and report each dent over the aircraft skin. This process is not only hazardous, but also extremely subject to human factors and environmental conditions. This study discusses the feasibility of automated dent scanning via a single-shot triangular stereo Fourier transform algorithm, designed to be compatible with the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The original algorithm is modified intr… Show more

“…The signals are obtained scanning flat a white board several times and in different positions with the 3D scanner. In this case a system based on Fourier transform profilometry [19,20] was chosen. An example of its noise distribution over a flat board about 40 cm wide is shown in Fig.…”

“…Conversely, the transform-based methods, 12 14 requiring only a single fringe for phase calculation, boast high efficiency 15 18 The Fourier transform (FT) algorithm, 19 21 a typical transform-based technique, transforms the fringe pattern into the frequency domain for phase extraction. Despite its high computation efficiency, the band-pass filtering process in the FT algorithm may compromise accuracy in edge regions.…”
