Automated function imaging: a new operator-independent strain method for assessing left ventricular function

Abstract: AFI is clinically applicable and an effective means of assessing LV function due to its short acquisition time, feasibility and accuracy, whatever the experience of the operator.

“…Two-dimensional global longitudinal strain obtained with the AFI technology provides objective and quantitative assessments of LV function. AFI is novel, angle independent, more reproducible, apparently simpler, and computationally faster speckle tracking technique (20). In various studies, which were conducted on patients with systolic heart failure and AFI method was used, GL S value defined by AFI was correlated with the wall motion score determined by angiography and echocardiography.…”

“…In each of the apical views, LV walls were divided into six segments, for each LV segment the value of strain and quality of tracking were then assessed. The mean L S value was calculated for each of the three views (20). The value of the global longitudinal LV strain (GL S ) was calculated as the arithmetical mean of the values.…”

“…2D strain is an automated and quantitative technique for the measurement of global long-axis function from gray-scale images. Longitudinal tissue deformation is evaluated by frame-byframe tracking of individual speckles throughout the cardiac cycle, and GLS is calculated from the mean of 18 cardiac segments [14].…”

“…Left ventricular (LV) volumes and ejection fraction (EF) were obtained by the modified biplane Simpson's method. Speckle tracking analysis using the commercially available automated function image technique was applied for assessment of global longitudinal strain (GLS) from apical long-axis slices (long-axis and 2-and 4-chamber views) using a previously reported method [13,14].…”

“…Many other works [2,[14][15][16][17][18][19] have related to tracking quality indices that have been employed in order to decide whether to include or exclude strain measurements. The commercial vendors usually provide tracking quality indices that state a scoring of "acceptable" or "non-acceptable" segmental strain measurements, with the option of manual corrections.…”
