El discurso sobre el papel y el impacto de la inteligencia artificial (IA) en el periodismo tiende a oscilar entre el temor a que los robots sustituyan a los periodistas y la esperanza de que las máquinas puedan ayudar a impulsar el periodismo de calidad.Como muestran los capítulos de este libro, la IA periodística es mucho más que la redacción automatizada de noticias, puesto que va desde la comprobación de hechos hasta la traducción o la creación multimedia. En el centro de todo ello se encuentra un aspecto fundamental de la finalidad del uso de las nuevas tecnologías y a quién sirven. La IA tiene que suponer para el periodismo algo más que ahorrar dinero o reducir puestos de trabajo. Tiene que ser algo más que reproducir las formas de trabajo existentes con máquinas que trabajen más y con mayor rapidez. El periodismo como profesión y servicio público es demasiado importante para que la IA lo deje atrás. Es urgente que los profesionales y los académicos vayan más allá del aquí y ahora, que dejen de mirar al futuro por el retrovisor y, en su lugar, abracen las incertidumbres, los retos y las oportunidades que se avecinan.

“…The BBC's News Labs innovation team begin experimenting with Structured Journalism in 2015 (BBC News Labs, 2015), work that has continued into the 2020s, with a series of projects expressing news as graphical storytelling, concept‐level “explainer” journalism and summarized news. Beyond the BBC, significant work on automated journalism has been implemented at The Press Association's RADAR unit (Thäsler‐Kordonouri and Barling, 2023), The Washington Post, and many other publishers. Significant work on structured journalism was completed at Reuters (Amico, 2013), the Washington Post, The Boston Globe (Gourarie, 2015), and other newsrooms.…”

The appearance of large language models (LLMs) and other forms of generative AI portend a new era of disruption and innovation for the news industry, this time focused on the production and consumption of news rather than on its distribution. Large news organizations, however, may be surprisingly well‐prepared for at least some of this disruption because of earlier innovation work on automating workflows for personalized content and formats using structured techniques. This article reviews this work and uses examples from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and other large news providers to show how LLMs have recently been successfully applied to addressing significant barriers to the deployment of structured approaches in production, and how innovation using structured techniques has more generally framed significant editorial and product challenges that might now be more readily addressed using generative AI. Using the BBC's next‐generation authoring and publishing stack as an example, the article also discusses how earlier innovation work has influenced the design of flexible infrastructure that can accommodate uncertainty in audience behavior and editorial workflows – capabilities that are likely to be well suited to the fast‐approaching AI‐mediated news ecosystem.

This study investigates the function of data journalism in a UK newsroom using Bourdieu’s field theory. The collection of study data was conducted through in-depth interviews, utilising a qualitative research methodology. The data obtained revealed that data journalism, a sub-field of journalism, continues to develop in an interdisciplinary structure and creates a new type of habitus (data habitus) within the field of journalism. This study also shows that the data journalism team in the newspaper has moved from being niche to being established as one of the most active and effective main sections of the newsroom, and that data-driven journalism has the potential to influence other teams. Lastly, this study suggested that the newsroom is undergoing a process of datafication by indicating the newspaper’s intention to develop data skills beyond the data journalism team.
