Automated Morphometric Analysis of the Cat Retinal Α/Y, Β/X and Δ Ganglion Cells Using Wavelet Statistical Moment and Clustering Algorithms

Abstract: Computational morphological analysis comprises the development of measures (indicators) that describe different form attributes of a neuron and provides additional parameters for classification algorithms. Our work addressed the problem of small group sizes often encountered in neuromorphological and neurophysiological research, automated classification tasks (unsupervised learning) and introduced a new morphological measure: the wavelet statistical moment. We analysed cat alpha/Y, beta/X and delta Golgi-stain… Show more

“…For instance, it has been shown that from the cell body of the large asymmetrical (type E) neuron of the cerebellar dentate nucleus 8-10 thick primary dendrites spread out in all directions and each of them immediately branches dichotomously at least 4-6 times (Chan-Palay 1977). Similarly, Jelinek et al (2004) showed that the density of the dendritic tips is most pronounced at greater distances from the cell body. Uylings et al (1986) showed that the terminal segments in nearly all types of neurons measured have a manifold larger length than the branching (intermediate) segments.…”

“…Adaptada de [18] que as formas de células neuronais não têm influência sobre suas funções, mas sim a maneira em que arranjos sinápticos entre células ocorrem [52]. A fim de entender melhor esta relação intrigante, a análise de formas de células neuronais, por meio de algoritmos computacionais, tem desempenhado um papel importante mais do que nunca [53].…”
