Automated planning of concrete joint layouts with 4D-BIM

Abstract:  A prototype integrating 4D BIM applications were developed to facilitates real-time concrete joint layout planning.  The system improves integration of structural design process and eases decision making prior construction phase.  The system helps reducing structural damages caused by operational shortfalls and supply-chain issues.  This paper contributes to 4D BIM literature by integrating operational data with design considerations to leverage efficiency.  Paper discussed how the system can be improved… Show more

“…BIM has been widely used in construction projects for improving communication among various parties during different phases of design and project delivery [8,9]. However, due to the myriad of issues such as the unpredictable pace of works, continually changing site environments, and the need for constant synchronisations, BIM use has been hindered in the monitoring of construction projects.…”

“…Researchers have studied various aspects of BIM approaches to amend the quality of designing and management of buildings by increasing speed and reliability in modelling big data with BIM, such as modelling of concrete structures and optimization of sensor deployment [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. Using the 4D BIM approach for controlling concrete joints through Dynamo software reduced the inefficiencies of other approaches related to construction joints and planning pour despite some limitations such as problems related to circular elements, everyday fluctuating of concrete volume, and attendance of mixer trucks during the concreting process [ 38 ]. Of great interest is the plan for future studies to integrate 4D BIM models with on-site sensor monitoring to improve the health monitoring process visualizing and analyses, besides considering duration, productivity, and real-time hazards [ 39 , 40 ].…”

“…The integration of an automation tool with pre-written scripts into the BIM environment of VPL assists in conducting digital information management effectively, especially safety visual information. The VPL uses a block-based program and is designed with predefined functions related to model components in a BIM environment [33,46,47]; therefore, this paper employs Autodesk Dynamo which enables both textual and visual programming, and allows users to simultaneously code and design 3D models [48]. This user-friendly data interface programming enables to establish bilateral integration between Revit and MS Excel.…”
