Automatic characterization of emergent phenomena in complex systems

Abstract: One of the main characteristics of complex systems is that the interrelations between the entities composing the system are not permanently established but evolve along time. As opposed to complicated systems, the structure of complex systems also evolve in a dynamic organizational process. When studying complex systems, self-organization and emergent phenomena must therefore be taken into account and studied carefully. In this paper, we propose to provide tools in order to automatically detect and characteriz… Show more

“…In [10], a difference between these two concepts is made based on the dynamical nature of the relations between system components. Thus, even if both can be defined as a set of numerous interacting elements, the system components are considered to be fixed in time and space in a complicated system while they can vary dynamically into a complex system.…”

“…During the XIX t h century, has been introduced in biology and in philosophy as opposed to reductionism. Then, more recently, this concept lead to a great deal of research work in several scientific domains such as in computer science, [12], [15], [16], [18], [18], in complex systems study [10], in sociology,...…”

“…It is closely related to the emergence detection and reification problem (David and Courdier, 2009). Two main approaches have been proposed to tackle this issue: a statistical one (e.g., (Caillou and Gil-Quijano, 2012;Caillou et al, 2013;Moncion et al, 2010;Vo et al, 2012)) and a symbolic one (Chen et al, 2010(Chen et al, , 2009). It would be interesting to integrate them.…”

“…Indeed, the reactive multi-agent systems are based on numerous agents, the behaviours of which are triggered by numerous interactions. Generally, such systems are considered to be complex as referred to the definition given in [8]. Thus, it's hard to interact with the system because its complex nature makes its understanding impossible even if all local aspects are well known.…”
