At present, many network applications are seeking to implement Time-Sensitive Network (TSN) technology, which not only furnishes communication transmission services that are deterministic, low-latency, highly dependable, and have ample bandwidth, but also enables unified configuration management, permitting different network types to function under a single management system. These characteristics enable it to be widely used in many fields such as industrial sensor and actuator networks, in-vehicle networks, data center networks, and edge computing. Nonetheless, TSN’s configuration management faces numerous difficulties and challenges related to network deployment, automated operation, and maintenance, as well as real-time and safety assurance, rendering it exceedingly intricate. In recent years, some studies have been conducted on TSN configuration management, encompassing various aspects such as system design, key technologies for configuration management, protocol enhancement, and application development. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of systematic summaries of these studies. Hence, this article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of TSN configuration management. Drawing upon more than 70 relevant publications and the pertinent standards established by the IEEE 802.1 TSN working group, we first introduce the system architecture of TSN configuration management from a macro perspective and then explore specific technical details. Additionally, we demonstrate its application scenarios through practical cases and finally highlight the challenges and future research directions. We aspire to provide a comprehensive reference for peers and new researchers interested in TSN configuration management.

This paper proposes a novel and efficient real time network architecture, named RT-TelSurg, for one of the most appealing tactile Internet applications, i.e., Telesurgery. In telesurgery, the patient's vital signs and status and the required robotic commands during the surgery should be received on time. Otherwise, the life of the patient or the safety of the operation is endangered. Hence, transmitted packets should meet their respective relative deadlines. Software-defined networking is a relatively new architecture for computer and telecommunications networks in which the network control plane is separated from the data plane. One way to achieve real time telesurgery is to employ cloud and fog networks using SDN as infrastructure. By using a real time cloud controller in the SDN as the core and a fog controller on the edge of the network on the master (physician) side, one may satisfy the acceptable level of the timing constraints of the telesurgery. Accordingly, based on the presented architecture, we develop the statistical performance model of our proposed approach, RT-TelSurg. This statistical queuing theory model is designed for critical and non-critical states of the network. Based on these states, network resources are allocated to telesurgery data in both modes, and a computational bottleneck is detected. RT-TelSurg is evaluated according to real time and surgery efficiency parameters. The results show that the average deadline hit ratio is 98.2% in different conditions, which is quite acceptable for telesurgery applications.

Integration of a surgical robotic arm to the connected operating room via ISO IEEE 11073 SDC

Purpose Since 2019, intraoperative networking with ISO IEEE 11073 SDC has, for the first time, enabled standardized multi-vendor data exchange between medical devices. For seamless plug-and-play integration of devices without previous configuration, further specifications for device profiles (“device specializations”) on top of the existing core standards must be developed. These generic interfaces are then incorporated into the standardization process. Methods An existing classification scheme of robotic assistance functions is being adopted and used as a baseline to derive functional requirements for a universal interface for modular robot arms. Additionally, the robot system requires machine-machine interfaces (MMI) to a surgical navigation system and a surgical planning software in order to carry out its function. Further technical requirements are derived from these MMI. The functional and technical requirements motivate the design of an SDC-compatible device profile. The device profile is then assessed for feasibility. Results We present a new modeling of a device profile for surgical robotic arms intended for neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery. The modeling in SDC succeeds for the most part. However, some details of the proposed model cannot yet be realized within the framework of the existing SDC standards. Some aspects can already be realized, but could be better supported in the future by the nomenclature system. These improvements are being presented as well. Conclusion The proposed device profile presents a first step toward a uniform technical description model for modular surgical robot systems. The current SDC core standards lack some functionality to fully support the proposed device profile. These could be defined in future work and then included in standardization efforts.
