Automatic J–A Model Parameter Tuning Algorithm for High Accuracy Inrush Current Simulation

Abstract: Inrush current simulation plays an important role in many tasks of the power system, such as power transformer protection. However, the accuracy of the inrush current simulation can hardly be ensured. In this paper, a Jiles-Atherton (J-A) theory based model is proposed to simulate the inrush current of power transformers. The characteristics of the inrush current curve are analyzed and results show that the entire inrush current curve can be well featured by the crest value of the first two cycles. With compre… Show more

“…Firstly, the 3D geometry model of the new current transformer is established in the calculation environment, and the physical parameters of the electro-thermal coupling are determined according to the materials of each part of the transformer. “…This approach leads to the model of an anhysteretic magnetization curve expressed with the hyperbolic tangent function A convenient model of hysteresis should be simple to use in calculations, described with a small set of parameters, and provide a good fit to the experimental data. Various mathematical models have been developed to describe hysteresis loops, such as the wide-spread Jiles-Atherton (JA) [2][3][4] and Preisach formalisms [5][6][7][8]. However, parameter determination for the JA model can be complicated, whereas the Preisach model can be computationally demanding.…”

“…Description of magnetomechanical effect still remains its most important application target [14], yet it should be stated that the JA model is quite versatile. Some of the less common applications include modeling of transient states in electrical grids related to inrush phenomena [15] or calculations of shielding factors [16]. The Jiles-Atherton model including the magnetoelastic term is usually applied for the description of magnetization processes in steels [6][7][8][17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”
