Automatic, Multiview, Coplanar Extraction for CityGML Building Model Texture Mapping

Abstract: Most 3D CityGML building models in street-view maps (e.g., Google, Baidu) lack texture information, which is generally used to reconstruct real-scene 3D models by photogrammetric techniques, such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mapping. However, due to its simplified building model and inaccurate location information, the commonly used photogrammetric method using a single data source cannot satisfy the requirement of texture mapping for the CityGML building model. Furthermore, a single data source usually su… Show more

“…For this aim, a facade image can be used for 3D reconstruction. He et al [191] proposed a method to accurately map the exterior texture images of real buildings onto their virtual models. The authors used multi-angle images of the exterior of the building, and through geometric transformation, pasted the transformed texture image of the exterior wall of the building onto the virtual model of the building.…”

“…An accurate "as-is" representation of an existing building should take these aspects into account. Many studies have been conducted to create 3D building models by projecting images of buildings extracted from aerial photographs, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or street-level imagery onto 3D models [10][11][12][13]. The model generated by this method may look natural from a distance, but upon closer inspection, the texture resolution may be insufficient, or unnecessary obstacles may be reflected, resulting in poor visualization.…”

“…Texture mapping is the colorization of a 3D mesh using one or more images [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. In the latest applications, usually several overlapping images are available to texture the 3D mesh, and a technique to manage the redundant photometric information is required.…”
