Automatic perceptual color map generation for realistic volume visualization

Abstract: Advances in computed tomography imaging technology and inexpensive high performance computer graphics hardware are making high-resolution, full color (24-bit) volume visualizations commonplace. However, many of the color maps used in volume rendering provide questionable value in knowledge representation and are non-perceptual thus biasing data analysis or even obscuring information. These drawbacks, coupled with our need for realistic anatomical volume rendering for teaching and surgical planning, has motivat… Show more

“…These tools include multiplane clipping, rotation, zoom, pan, Hounsfield unit (HU) density-based windowing, voxel volumetrics of user-defined anatomic regions, and customizable color maps, all of which are invoked by the user through an intuitive, easy-to-use interface. MedVolViz further enhances the visualization through the use of a patented perceptual colorization algorithm 4 that linearly correlates changes in perceived color luminance with changes in HU scalar density. 3.…”

“…Jonathan and Nigel [2] in their method generated an automatic color map for realistic volume visualization. Their approach says that most of the color maps used for volume rendering has value questionable and even data analysis information is also unclear so they proposed an automatic color map for realistic volume visualization.…”
